Part of our Kanaka Kala Collection, this design features King Kamehameha The Great. The tiki design is a recreation of the war god Kūkā‘ilimoku (The Snatcher of Islands). Upon the death of his uncle, King Kalaniʻōpuʻu, in 1782, Kamehameha became the guardian of Kūkaʻilimoku. Kamehameha built temples for his war god, seeking his support and influence in his military ambitions and conquests.
The phrase Kānāwai Māmalahoe, or the Law of the Splintered Paddle, is an ancient Hawaiian law established by King Kamehameha I in 1797, protecting the safety of non-combatants such as women, the elderly, and children during times of conflict. The law mandates that these individuals should be able to rest by the roadside without fear of harm, a principle that has become a symbol of servant leadership and human rights, and is enshrined in the Hawaii State Constitution today.
